Heat and Thermodynamics :: Problem 3

Problem 3: In a certain process 400J of heat is supplied to a system and at the sametime 150J of work is done by the system. Find the amount of energy increased in the system.

Solution:

Step:1 Overview

The change in internal energy of a system (ΔU) in any process is equals to net heat flow into the system (ΔQ) minus the total Work done by the system (ΔW).
ΔU=ΔQ-ΔW
Important points to remember:
ΔQ is taken +ve if heat is supplied to system.
ΔQ is taken -ve if heat is released from the system.
ΔW is taken +ve if work is done by system.
ΔW is taken -ve if work is done on system.

Step:2 Calculation

Given data:
ΔQ=400J (heat is supplied to system)
ΔW=150J (work is done by system)
ΔQ=Required
Solution:
ΔU=ΔQ-ΔW
ΔU=400J-150J
ΔU=250J (Ans)
