Current and Electric Circuits :: Problem 5

Problem 5: A wire carries a current of 1A. How many electrons pass a point in the wire an each second?

Solution:

Step: 1 Overview

Charge and electrons:
Electrons are the basic particles carrying a certain amount of charge. Current flow in a circuit due to movement of electrons from one end to another. Each electron carry 1.6 x 10-19C of charge.

Step: 2 Calculation

Given:
I=1A
e= 1.6 x 10-19C
t= 1second.
Required:
number of electrons (n)=?
Solution:
We know that:
I=Q/t
Q=It
Q=(1A)(1s)
Q=1C
Also we know that:
Q=ne
n=Q/e
n=(1C)/(1.6 x 10-19C)
n=6.25 x 1018(Ans)
