Electrostatics :: Problem 6

Problem 6: There is a potential difference of 150V between two conductors of a power line. A charge of 600C is carried from one conductor to the other. How much work is required? If the time necessary to transport the charge is 1.25s how much power is used?

Solution:

Step: 1 Overview

Electric Potential:
Work done on moving a charge against the electric field per unit charge known as electric potential. Mathematically:

V=W/q

Step: 2 Calculation

Since V=W/q, Work done will be:
W=Vq
W=(150V)(600C)
W=90000J
Also P=W/t
P=90000J/1.25s
P=72000W
Work done=9x104J, and Power=7.2x104W (Ans)
